Lynda's Story

I wasted so much time and energy trying to figure out what to do when I became ill and couldn't work as a beautician. In my business, when you don't show up for work, you don't get any pay. There are no sick days or vacation days. And here I was feeling sick almost every day. I was diagnosed in 2003 with ovarian cancer. It wasn't a good diagnosis and of course, I was scared I would die. Little did I know that the treatment was going to make me feel sicker than I did when I found out I had the cancer.

I went through a year of chemotherapy and other drug treatments that left me feeling completely wiped out. For several months, I didn't have the strength to go to work at all. Needless to say, I lost most of my regular clients during that time. When the doctor told me the cancer had returned, I felt the bottom going out from under me. How on earth could I continue for another eighteen months of treatments after the horrible year I had just been through?

Then a good thing finally happened to me. My neighbor suggested I hire a disability attorney, which I didn't even know existed. Before I could even find the name of an attorney, I saw an ad that offered free help---which was about what I could afford. So I called the number and started getting helpful advice from that moment on.

When the guy on the phone told me that I didn't have to pay the attorney until I started receiving benefits, I felt like I had won the lottery. But that was nothing compared to how happy I was when my attorney called to tell me that I had been granted social security disability benefits.

It hasn't been an easy four years for me to say the least. But I do have some good days now and even started working two half-days a week. My disability benefits have really made a positive difference in how I feel about my life and I am especially grateful for the great legal help I received at a time when I really needed someone on my side.
