When I was denied disability, I didn't know what to do next. Hey, I'm a smart guy and I thought I filled out everything just as
the directions said to do. Turns out that even with pages and pages
of information from my doctor and a diagnosis of Crohn's disease, I was still turned down by Social Security.
That was really a dark time for me. I felt like everything I had worked for was about to be lost and I had no idea what to do next. I really had no strength most days to even do the things I used to enjoy, let alone hold down a job.
After several sleepless nights, I saw an ad on TV that said you could hire an attorney to help with disability benefits with no cost unless you were successful. I figured that there was no reason not to give it a try. So I called and gave my information to a really nice person over the phone. Right away I started to feel like maybe I did have a chance. At least I felt I had someone on my side for a change.
Once I begin working with my attorney, I knew I had made the right decision. My attorney filed for an appeal and kept me informed of what was going on with my case and what information was needed for the next steps. She had me keep a diary every day so that I could keep track of my symptoms and be able to explain what my life was really like on a day-to-day basis.
Before the hearing, we discussed the kind of work I used to do and the kind of work available to me with my disease. I have to say, it sure made me feel good to have an expert preparing me and representing me and my concerns. The icing on the cake was when my attorney notified me that my appeal was successful.
Now I am receiving regular checks from Social Security and that has made all the difference in the world to me. I was even talking with my brother last week, telling him how glad I was that I used to have sleepless nights—at least the night I saw that ad about hiring a disability attorney. I certainly recommend getting professional legal assistance before you give up on ever getting disability benefits.
